A regional hospital in the tropics, Mackay Base Hospital provides specialist care for a wide catchment area in one of the fastest growing population regions in the country. It also provides a teaching role, affiliated with James Cook University and Central Queensland University.
The 2007 masterplan was reviewed for clinical area adjacencies, future flexibility, retention of existing building stock and staging constraints. As a result of this and user group consultations, a revised masterplan was achieved which was driven by improving access to clinical health services, value for money, project delivery and staging, ESD and evidence-based design, future proofing and flexibility and teaching and research components. A complete redevelopment of the current hospital over three construction stages followed, approximately doubling the size and number of beds of the existing facility, while keeping all facilities running 24/7
