BLP reveals design for the Queensland Cancer Centre, a new era of cancer care in Queensland

Billard Leece Partnership (BLP) is proud to announce its appointment as the lead architect for the initial design phase of the Queensland Cancer Centre (QCC), a state-of-the-art healthcare facility that redefines the landscape of cancer treatment in Queensland.

Tara Veldman, BLP Managing Director, expressed her excitement about the project, “The Queensland Cancer Centre is not just a building, it’s a commitment to the future of cancer care in Queensland. As lead architects, BLP is proud to be entrusted with the design of QCC, as it plays a pivotal role in Queensland’s healthcare as a beacon of hope and healing.”

QCC will be the only cancer centre in Australia to offer the full spectrum of cancer treatments, including advanced proton therapy, as a state-wide service. Located on the existing campus of the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital (RBWH) and on Turrbal and Yuggara Country, this project, designed in collaboration with Lend Lease and LCI Consultants for Health Infrastructure Queensland (HIQ), Queensland Health, extends beyond the physical structure, embodying a holistic approach to patient well-being, compassionate care and cutting-edge medical technology. The facility will feature a warm and welcoming front of house, a day therapy service, outpatient consult rooms (including facilities for telehealth consultations), 150 overnight beds, four operating theatres, and proton therapy, marking a new era for cancer treatment in Queensland.

Alessandro Filippi, Project Director, and Health Lead at BLP, shared his goal for the project: “We are delighted to support Queensland Health in bringing their vision to life – a facility that fosters healing and tranquillity while being adaptive to the evolving needs of cancer care delivery. The Queensland Cancer Centre has been thoughtfully designed to be an outstanding example of the future of health, balancing compassionate care with the latest technology and wellness principles.”

BLP’s innovative architectural design for QCC is a testament to its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and community well-being. The design features intuitive navigation, a commitment to environmental sustainability through the integration of green building materials and energy-efficient practices, and a conceptual framework that supports robust health facility planning.

Recently completing the concept design phase, Brad Dorn, Design Lead at BLP, emphasised the importance of community integration in the design, saying “QCC is not just a healthcare facility; it’s a community hub. The design takes into account the importance of the public realm and is designed to seamlessly integrate with the urban fabric of the Herston Health Precinct, inviting the community in and fostering a sense of belonging”. Dorn continues “Critical to the design has been the incorporation of landscaped areas throughout the building for everyone to access, promoting a strong biophilic response for the site.”

BLP is continuing their collaborative relationship with Health Infrastructure Queensland (HIQ) through the QCC project, following the successful collaboration on the Bundaberg Hospital. QCC stands as a testament to Queensland’s dedication to advancing cancer care. The design lays the groundwork for a centre that will not only provide exceptional medical care but also serve as a symbol of hope and progress. QCC is set to become a cornerstone of the community, a place where patients receive not just treatment, but also the support and care they need to navigate their journey through cancer treatment and wellness. This is a project that Queensland can be proud of, a beacon of hope and progress in the fight against cancer.
