The Supreme Court of Victoria project by BLP has won the 2009 Excellence Award from the Illuminating Engineers Society. The jury commented:
A simple, clean and effective design. Unobtrusive and comfortable with beautiful central bespoke pendant. A good example of the adage ‘less is more’. A beautiful piece of heritage transformed into the present day through the use of lighting.
The project sees the upgrade a major public building upgrade of high heritage and social significance. The works involved restoration, conservation and upgrading to meet present-day expectations of technology.
The design makes the Court a sustainable building with the introduction of natural light; the inclusion of a passive cooling system of plenums and ducts; the use of renewable, locally sourced materials; and the integration of new mechanical services with the existing structure.
The overall intent embraces the tradition of the historic building, retaining the majority of its historic fabric. The design of the central light fitting is based on the original gasolier.
