La Trobe University’s Rural Health School was part of a far reaching plan to stem the shortage of health professionals in rural areas by revolutionising the way rural healthcare education is delivered. Part of the Regional Strategic Plan 2009-2012, the School aimed to enhance the economic, social and cultural fabric of regional communities.
The 5 Star Green Star Clinical Teaching Building is co-located with the Monash University School of Rural Health and the Primary Health Care Clinic on the site of the Bendigo Health campus. The focus for the final 18 months of health science courses, the three level building is conceived as a series of boxes connected by a main circulation spine.
Natural light enters from a north facing terrace as well as roof lights over the central circulation space. Vertical recycled stringybark timber posts create a “lantern” of warmth and shadow play while a monochrome general palette of sriped greys in student rooms and corridor spaces, gives way to a strong contrasting deep red ochre in the student common room.
