Delivering a design that emphasises a non-hospital environment
Following a masterplan and feasibility study undertaken by BLP in 2010, the Maternity and Special Care Nursery project was the first of the redevelopment stages undertaken to address future projections of the Child Birthing Centre. An environment for the care and wellbeing of pregnant women, new mothers and their babies, the design emphasises a non-hospital environment creating a different language that is evoked in a non-institutional façade and legible and accessible interiors.
Distinctive gestures such as articulated highlight windows and integrated landscape differentiate the Maternity and Special Care Nursery as spaces not defined by the standard Hospital experience, indicating this is the area of the Hospital to celebrate new life rather than provide respite to the sick.
In 2011, BLP were engaged to undertake Stage 1A, a phased development comprising a 30 bed sub-acute inpatient facility and Community Rehabilitation Centre.
