This project involved insertion of a new façade into Melbourne’s most intact historic streetscape and providing a new image for the Grand Hyatt Hotel.
A new entry in Melbourne’s most intact historic streetscape provided a fresh image for the Grand Hyatt Hotel. A striking modern insertion responds to the scale and texture of the historic surroundings sitting comfortably in its context.
Located on Collins Street, the 1980s façade was given a mask of translucent stainless steel mesh, providing a striking new image. With columns rising to the height of the building and a free-floating cornice above, the project resolved the dilemma of a modern reinterpretation in a historical streetscape. Redevelopment of the podium facing the street provided high quality retail space and new offices above. Internally the atrium was reduced and the retailing reconfigured creating a new laneway style route through the building to the hotel lobby and Russell Street.
