Designing around contemporary standards while ensuring social and historical heritage remained intact
The first upgrade works to the Supreme Court of Victoria undertaken to the Court’s Main Trial Division comprised services, technology, heritage and architectural upgrade of six existing historic courtrooms. It also provides two new courtrooms, refurbishment of all wet areas and judicial amenities. External heritage repair works to roof areas and walls were also undertaken.
The existing 1880s solid masonry and timber framed building had not undergone significant upgrade works since the 1950s. The challenge was to provide the long term requirement for a functional Supreme Court complex that meets present day standards without obliterating the social and historical heritage embodied within.
